We’ve had the pleasure of indulging in their tasting menu, accompanied by carefully selected wine pairings, and it's an experience we absolutely want to do all over again. Each dish was a revelation, showcasing local ingredients with innovative flair. Lovage is the ideal destination for a special evening, where the focus is squarely on enjoying sublime food and wine in good company.

The Rutland, Bakewell
Just a stone's throw from our cozy holiday retreat, Swallow Cottage, lies The Rutland, a Bakewell institution that's as welcoming as it is delightful. This spot has become a firm favourite of ours, especially for those lazy Sunday afternoons when all you crave is a hearty roast and the company of your four-legged friend. The Rutland warmly welcomes dogs in its bar area, making it a perfect pit stop for pet owners. Here, the emphasis is on local produce, served up with genuine pride and care. Their Sunday roast is a thing of beauty, a true homage to traditional British fare, and the ideal precursor to an afternoon nap back at the cottage.

The George, Castleton
In the charming village of Castleton, the George is a champion of traditional Derbyshire hospitality. This historic alehouse, a short wander from our own Lodge Cottage, offers hearty food (think pies and puddings) and a warm welcome to all - pooches included. It’s the embodiment of the local pub culture, serving up an array of robust ales and comforting, home-cooked meals that promise to satisfy after a day of exploring nearby Mam Tor and the famous caverns below.
But the George’s allure isn’t confined to its interior. On sunny days its outdoor seating becomes a coveted spot. Here, you can dine under the watchful eye of Peveril Castle, an imposing structure perched on the nearby hill, offering a backdrop steeped in history and natural beauty. It's an idyllic setting. We’ve even been there while local Morris dancers performed outside, bringing a bit of folklore to life right before our eyes.
It’s a great destination that promises a slice of Derbyshire's heritage with every visit.

The Bull's Head, Ashford
The Bull's Head in the picturesque village of Ashford is a cozy spot loved by both locals and visitors. We love it as it’s dog-friendly and really shows off the friendly vibe of the Peak District. It’s a great place to grab a pint, relax, and make connections.
The food is great too. Try the lamb gyros – they're a hit, mixing classic tastes with a bit of fun. Our kids love the Unicorn pie (not made with real unicorns, you’ll be glad to know). There's also a great selection of local beers that go well with everything on the menu. The staff are always welcoming, making you feel right at home.
Due to its small size, The Bull's Head can get a bit busy but that just gives it a lively atmosphere, adding to its charm. It's not just a pub; it's a community hub where you can make memories and enjoy great times with friends.

Another gem just a heartbeat away from Lodge Cottage, 1530 Restaurant in Castleton is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in Italian-inspired food. We love the intimate environment, setting the stage for an unforgettable culinary journey. The menu is a testament to creativity and quality, offering a range of traditional to modern Italian-inspired choices that cater to diverse palates, not to mention an impressive selection of gins!
The roast cod with crispy chorizo is one of our menu highlights, a dish that perfectly encapsulates the restaurant's commitment to flavour and finesse. On Sundays, the beef short rib becomes the star, offering a taste of comfort and luxury in every bite. However, what truly sets 1530 apart is its ambiance. It's rare to find a restaurant in the High Peaks that combines excellent food and drink with a genuinely romantic setting. Such a great venue for a special evening!
